The personal computer has experienced an unprecedented success story and has become a firmly established part of everyday life, including industrial environments. Together with associated software, PCs in different shapes and forms are at the core of a wide range of diverse automation tasks such as control of machines, processes or logistics systems, networking of system components, data acquisition, or image processing. For classic control tasks, PC-based control technology offers excellent scalability and flexibility and is therefore increasingly used in place of hardware PLCs.

Beckhoff is one of the pioneers of PC-based automation: the first PC control system was delivered as early as 1986. The extensive Beckhoff portfolio of highly scalable drive components is developed and produced exclusively in Germany. In addition to the Verl production site, the mechanical drive components have mainly been manufactured in Marktheidenfeld since 2010. A very high quality standard is ensured by state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies and extensive testing, including comprehensive traceability. The high manufacturing depth – in combination with reliable cooperation with suppliers – ensures the flexibility and short response times necessary to meet customer requirements. TwinCAT Software - Automation

- Open, PC-based control technology

TwinCAT 3 automation software integrates real-time control with PLC, NC, and CNC functions in a single package. Beckhoff controllers are programmed uniformly with the TwinCAT Engineering (XAE), according to the programming standards IEC 61131-3 with C++ or MATLAB®/Simulink®. The generated code is executed in the TwinCAT Runtime (XAR). The TwinCAT Runtime is a multitasking operating system that runs in parallel on the host operating system. Windows and TwinCAT/BSD in 32-bit and 64-bit variants can be used as host operating systems. In addition to high determinism, the TwinCAT real-time offers the possibility to fully utilise the PC’s existing cores in multicore operation.

The TwinCAT 3 Engineering area contains all components and products that can be used for configuring, programming, simulating, diagnosing and debugging user programs or applications. These components are mostly installed and used on the engineering PC. In addition to the TE1000 development environment, there are numerous functions that significantly expand the range of functions.

As a specialist for PC-based control technology, Beckhoff consistently aims to integrate all machine functionalities into one control platform. With TwinCAT Vision, this has included image processing within software since 2017. The machine vision product spectrum is now complete thanks to the introduction of the comprehensive hardware range from Beckhoff. Machine builders and end users thus have a complete image processing system at their disposal that covers all the necessary components from software to illumination which, integrated into the system, provides users with significant competitive advantages.
